Alfonso "Poncho" M. Aguirre was a lifelong resident of San Benito, Texas. He attended the San Benito CISD schools and was a member of the St. Theresa Church. He was a devoted father and husband. He is the son of Severiana Moreno Aguirre and Anselmo Aguirre.
Alfonso Aguirre was a musician and was part of a conjunto group in Los Angeles, California, where his music is archived. His music was part of the Strachwitz Frontera Music Collection of Mexican and Mexican American Recordings with “Los Paisanos del Norte”. He was also the accordionist for the “Ramon Pinon Y Su Conjunto" group in San Benito, Texas. This conjunto enriched the local cultural events by providing music and entertainment at local quinceañeras, birthday parties, city events, and serenatas. His great uncle, Alejandro Aguirre, was the owner of an accordion repair shop in San Benito, where he learned to play the accordion.
The Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame & Museum honored Alfonso Aguirre with an interview and a tour of the museum in 2024.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lidia Gloria Davila Aguirre, twin daughter Ana Maria Aguirre, his parents, Severiana and Anselmo Aguirre. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Oscar Aguirre, Pablo Cantu, and Jesus Cantu. Sisters, Maria Cantu and Josefina Gonzales.
He is survived by his children, Armando Aguirre (Nora), Ana Aguirre-Cavazos, Rolando Aguirre, Dora (Gilbert) Perez, Delia (Louie) Aguirre-Garcia. He is survived by grandchildren: Carrie Segura, Christina Aguirre, Armando Aguirre Jr., Anthony Aguirre, Ismael Tejeda (Krystal), Cassandra L. Cavazos, Melissa L.Vega, Jordan Ramirez-Wally (James), Paulo Benavides Jr., Jacob Christian Garcia (Jennifer), Caleb James Garcia (Allyson), Chloe Jayden Garcia. He is also survived by sister Alicia Aguirre, Maria Aurora Aguirre, Juan Aguirre, and Jose Cantu
He is a great grandfather to Jaylin Alexis Mata, Emma Lanelle Vega, Hayden Amber Ramirez, Radric Garcia, Julian Jay Garcia, Peyton Austin Wally, Trae O’Day Benavides, Kiera Mcardle, Ryan Wally, Robert Carlos Segura, Raelene Catelyn Segura, Kailye Alyana Aguirre, Eli Angel Aguirre, Garylee Zeke Tamez, Everly Tejeda, Ethan Tejeda, Evelyn Tejeda, Violet Tejeda, Ryder Mcardle, and Madylin Jade Mcardle.
Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7:00 PM. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 10:00 AM Friday, February 26, 2026. Interment will follow San Benito City Cemetery.
Honored to serve as pallbearers will be his grandsons: Armando Aguirre Jr., Anthony Aguirre, Jacob Christian Garcia, Caleb James Garcia, Paulo Benavides Jr., Ismael Tejeda, and sons, Armando Aguirre, and Rolando Aguirre; Honorary Pallbearers: son in law, Louie Garcia. Thank you to our brother, Rolando, for being his loving caretaker. We are forever grateful for your devotion to dad.
