Alva “Al” McCoy Jones, Jr. of Harlingen, Texas was born on May 30, 1938, and passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026. He was 87. He was born to and is now reunited with his parents Selina and Alva Jones, Sr.
Al was raised in Harlingen and attended Harlingen High School and upon graduation, attended Texas A&M University where he was a proud Aggie and member of the Corp of Cadets graduating in 1960.
Al loved sports and was passionate about golf, first learning to play in Harlingen where he was a member of the High School golf team and then Captain of the Aggie Golf Team. Upon graduation Al followed his passion for golf as a professional golfer and longstanding member of the PGA both as a touring and club pro.
Al loved his family dearly and married his beloved wife Lynda on April 18, 1964. Their 62-year marriage epitomized a loving and caring relationship that brought love, joy, comfort and security to their four children, seven grandchildren and countless close friends and family.
Al is survived by his wife Lynda; his sister Lynn Murphy of Harlingen, TX; his son Mark and his wife Linda of Bradenton, FL; his son Todd of Absecon, NJ; his daughter Kimberly (Moreland) and her husband David of McAllen, TX; and his son Greg and his wife Shiloh of Austin, TX.
He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Nicholas Moreland; Autumn Jones and her husband Alex Macfarlane of Germantown, MD; Laurel Jones of Tampa, FL; Ava Jones, Landon Jones, Maya Jones and Henry Jones of Austin, TX.
Under the care of Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home, the Jones Family will gather with family and friends for a memorial service on Monday, March 2, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm in the Texas Room at Golden Palms Rehabilitation & Retirement Center at 2101 Treasure Hills Blvd, Harlingen, TX 78550. A reception will follow immediately.
Flowers and regards may be sent to Golden Palms. For those wishing to contribute in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Al’s name to the PGA REACH Foundation’s PGA Jr. League at pgareach.org
