Barbara Ruth Hartzog

August 19, 1935 — September 4, 2025

Barbara Ruth Hartzog passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on the morning of September 4, 2025, in Harlingen, Texas, at the age of 90.

Born on August 19, 1935, Barbara was the second of six children of Arthur Purvis “Mike” Hartzog and Mary Ruth Hartzog. From an early age, she demonstrated independence, curiosity, kindness, and a love of learning that would shape her life and touch countless others. After graduating from Rio Hondo High School in 1953, Barbara earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Texas A&I University in Kingsville.

Barbara always loved an adventure which led her to accept a teaching position at U.S. military bases across Japan, Spain, Germany and Libya. She loved to explore and travelled extensively for five years while teaching overseas. Barbara embraced every new culture with enthusiasm, collecting keepsakes and stories that she lovingly shared with her family. Upon returning to the States, she taught briefly in Florida before moving to Houston to be closer to her sister Linda and her family. There, Barbara dedicated over 35 years to teaching elementary school for Houston ISD, inspiring generations of students with her passion for learning. In retirement, Barbara moved to Austin, where she enjoyed traveling, reading books and spending cherished time with family and friends. She would often volunteer as a substitute teacher for the local school districts and remained active in her business sorority.

Beyond the classroom, Barbara was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Her greatest joy was her family. Inspired by her mother Ruth’s deep sense of family and tradition, Barbara carried that legacy forward, holding a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews and celebrating their every milestone. As a lifelong educator she enjoyed sending books and savings bonds to her grandnephews and grandnieces, always investing in their futures with love and intention.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Ruth, and her siblings Arthur Wayne, Dorothy Gwen, and Timothy King. She is survived by her sister Linda Kay Sandell and husband Larry of Leander, TX; her brother Gerald Lynn “Jerry” Hartzog and wife Jan of Rio Hondo, TX; seven beloved nieces and nephews; thirteen grandnieces and grandnephews; and one great-grandnephew—all of whom carry forward her legacy of love, learning, and generosity.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Valley View Senior Living and to all who offered Barbara comfort and compassion in her final days. A special thank you to Darlene, Francis and Vicky, whose thoughtful care and kindness meant so much to Barbara and to those who loved her. The family also wishes to thank Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home for their thoughtful guidance and support during this time.

A graveside service will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX on Wednesday, September 10th at 10 am.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to a charity that supports education or children’s literacy – causes Barbara championed throughout her life.
