Dorothy Affolter Pierce, lovingly known for her vibrant spirit and unforgettable personality, passed away peacefully on April 11th at her home surrounded by family. She was born on November 11, 1941, in Harlingen, Texas to Paul and Freda Affolter.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Terrell Miller (Martha) of San Antonio, James Miller (Becky) of Harlingen, and Rhonda McKinney (Kristopher) of Harlingen. She also leaves behind her brothers, Terry Affolter (Louise) of Texas City and Jimmy Affolter of Dickinson.
She was a proud grandmother to Freda Miller Hitchcock (Justin), Travis Miller (Danielle), Justin Miller (Katie), Bailey Miller Scaief (John), Caroline Miller Tice (Breyer), William McKinney, and Madison McKinney Peña (Stephen), as well as seven great-grandchildren, with one more expected in September, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Pierce; her parents, Paul and Freda Affolter; her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Walter Wizorek; her sister-in-law, Lola Affolter; and her former husbands, James “J.R.” McEowen and Clifton “Sonny” Miller.
Dorothy was raised in Rio Hondo, Texas, and spent most of her life in Rio Hondo and Harlingen. She worked with the Texas State Teachers Association, managed Dixieland Mobile Home and RV Park, and later owned and operated River Ranch RV Park.
Dorothy lived life with style. She was a true fashionista – never without her hair and makeup done, often dressed in bling and her signature love of animal prints. She was very crafty and had a truly artistic spirit. She loved the simple joys that made life sweet: a good happy hour, old country music, and most of all, being surrounded by family.
Her quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and big, joyful laugh will be deeply missed. Dorothy had a way of making an entrance – and a welcome – that no one could forget. She didn’t just walk into a room – she made it brighter.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Susie Trevino for the loving care and support she provided.
A service will be held on Friday, April 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be James Miller, Kristopher McKinney, Travis Miller, Justin Miller, William McKinney, and Justin Hitchcock.
Dorothy’s legacy of love, laughter, and bold spirit will live on through all who knew and loved her.
