Dr A.G.M., (Archie) Martin III died Wednesday morning, January 31, 2007, at the age of 91. He maintained his positive attitude, keen wit and zest for life to the very end.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Muriel Kiester Martin, their children, Anne Jones and her husband Johnny, Bunnie Graham and her husband Hoyle, Ginny Martin, and Graham Martin and his wife Jane. His grandchildren are Martin and David Grapengeter, Charlotte Savage, and Archie, Carl and Beaman Martin. His great granchildren are Alston and Watson Grapengeter, the children of David and Lynn Grapengeter, and Garrett and Tucker Savage, the children of Charlotte and Todd Savage. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Kinsey, his nephew Carrol Kinsey, his cousin Lolly Norris Holdt, and his brother in law David Kiester.
Archie was born and raised in Suffolk, Virginia. His childhood was spent exploring the battlefilds of the Civil War, scouring the hillsides for arrowheads, duck hunting, and Boy Scout activities.His parents were A.G.M. Martin, Jr. and Sally Twitty Martin.
He received his bachelor of science degree from Randolph Macon College before attending Duke Medical School, where he was awarded a degree in 1941. He went to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and continued his education in radiology at The University of Pennsylvania.
He joined the Airforce in 1941. He came to Harlingen in 1943 as a flight surgeon and aviation physiologist at the Air Force base, where he helped train 20,000 air crewman in high altitude flying. He served 2 tours abroad; the Philliphine Islands and Korea.
He retired as a Lt. Colonel and began his career in private practice in Radiology with Dr.s Smith and Hartman. His medical career continued in Harlingen at The Valley Baptist Hospital where he once served as chief of staff and head of the Radiology department. Later, after retirement, he worked as a diagnostic radiologist at the South Texas Hospital. He was highly respected and admired by his fellow doctors, staff and patients and widely regarded as a pioneer in the field of radiation therapy. He was known for his inteligence, kindness, and good humor. He was passionate about medicine and remained interested and informed way after his eventual (second) retirement at age 82.
Shortly after coming to the Valley, Archie met Muriel Kiester from La Feria , who was also serving in the military as a WASP (women’s air sevice pilot). They had four children and eventually settled in La Feria. They shared a love for avaition, sailing and travel in Mexico.
Besides being a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, Archie was an avid amateur archeologist, a sportsman, and a sailor. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3, 1:00pm at Buck Ascraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Drive.
