Edward James Glass, 87, of Harlingen, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born in San Antonio, Ed lived a full and hardworking life. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and married the love of his life, Irene Glass, in Corpus Christi in 1956. Together, they shared 64 years of devoted marriage, raising three children: Terry W. Glass and wife Esperanza, David J. Glass and wife Victoria, and Linda L. Glass.
The family moved to Harlingen in 1966, where Ed planted deep roots. In 1972, he opened his first independently owned business, Ed Glass Auto Supply, in a small strip center off 7th Street. His vision and determination led to a second location off F Street and eventually he purchased and converted the old Phillips 66 station at 7th and 77 Sunshine Strip to Ed Glass Auto Supply where he and Irene enjoyed the next 20 years working together to build a successful business. After developing a condition that left him physically handicapped, Ed shifted gears and transformed the auto parts store into a full-service laundromat, Laundry Land- a place known not only for clean clothes but for free coffee, friendly conversation, and Ed's endless supply of jokes. Ed cherished his family, friends, and customers and passed on a strong work ethic to his children, who worked in the family business growing up. He taught them how to fish, hunt, build, and fix anything. He loved country music and inventing things. He never missed a chance to make someone smile.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene and is survived by his three children, five grandchildren -Nathaniel Glass, Alexandra Glass, Benjamin Glass, Derek McNabb and wife Avery, and Thomas Gilliam IV—and three great-grandchildren: Westin O. McNabb, Oakly R. McNabb, and Wrenley C. McNabb, who is on her way.
If you ever come across a joke in print signed "EG," know that Ed is still making someone laugh. And just imagine Irene nearby, telling him to keep it clean.
The Glass family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Following the service Ed will be laid to rest at Heavenly Grace Memorial Park in La Feria, Texas.
