Elsa Linnea Swanson Carey, a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, passed from this life into the presence of Jesus Christ at the age of 97 on August 25, 2021. She lived in the San Antonio area near her son and daughter in San Antonio and Devine, Texas.
Elsa was born to Eric and Alice Swanson of Warrick, Rhode Island, January 14, 1924. She was a war bride during World War II and married James E. Carey, Jr. in her parent’s home in Rhode Island. She moved to Harlingen and lived with her in-laws, Ed and Monterey Carey, Sr., until the end of the war. After the war, Elsa and James, Jr. made their home in Harlingen.
Elsa and James, Jr. moved to South Padre Island where she served as secretary to Carey Construction in 1959. Elsa taught kindergarten in Austin and San Benito.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Carey, Jr. and their twin sons, Ronny and Donny.
Elsa in survived by her eldest son, Dr. James (Jimmy) E. Carey III and wife Colleen, and her daughter, Cay Carey Cooke and husband Dr. David G. Cooke, III. Also left to treasure her memory are seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grand-children; nephew, Wally Athey; nieces, Beverly Athey Cunningham, Valerie Duperron, Joyce Le Clair, and Judy George.
Funeral service will be held at the Mont Meta Chapel of Peace Mausoleum in San Benito at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 4, 2021.
