Ethyl Jane “EJ” Johnson-Davis passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2026. Born March 23, 1934, in Egan, Louisiana, EJ was the seventh of ten children born to George E. Truax and Beulah Marie Scanlan Truax. In the 1940’s the family moved from Louisianna to Fort Brown, Brownsville, Texas, where George was employed and EJ began school.
EJ graduated from San Benito High School in 1952, married, and began her family. Her career in banking began in 1964 when she went to work part time for the Harlingen Teachers’ Credit Union. She dedicated her career to banking and after 35 years retired from Harlingen Area Teacher’s Credit Union as the CEO.
EJ had a deep love for travel and treasured time spent with her sisters exploring Europe and Mexico. She also enjoyed cruising, with her favorite being a memorable trip to Alaska. She was proud of her Cajun roots and loved sharing those traditions with her children and grandchildren, making sure her gumbo recipe would be passed down for generations.
She enjoyed her football games and was a passionate Dallas Cowboys fan. She enjoyed her classical music and was an avid reader. EJ found great joy in hosting family and friends, especially during the holidays. Her home was often filled with laughter as she played cards late into the night, sharing stories and creating lasting memories with those she loved.
EJ was preceded in death by her parents, George E. and Beulah Marie Truax, her nine siblings, and her spouse, Joseph Robert Davis.
She is survived by her three children, Lea Ann Peacock and husband William, Laguna Vista, Robert Neal Hagens and wife Diana, Harlingen, and Patricia L. Gilday and husband Kelly, Midland. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Kristin Luckey and husband Weylan, Harlingen, Derek Hammond and wife Megan Georgetown, Charles Patrick Hammond and wife Amanda, Austin, Lynda J. Shannonhouse and husband Derrick, Houston, Lauren West-Hayward, Midland, Ryan N. Hagens, Kyle, and Caitlyn Hagens, Houston, and twelve great grandchildren, Lizbeth Appell, Emily Huerta and husband William, William E. Appell, Asher Hammond, Cullen Hammond, Jacob Hammond, Hunter Hammond, Hudson Hammond, Patrick Shannonhouse, Bryce Shannonhouse, Maddie Hayward, and Lucy Hayward.
In accordance with EJ’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral, simply graveside services for the immediate family. Please remember EJ in your daily actions, practice kindness, helping others, enjoying simple pleasures, listening to music, and facing your challenges with determination and grace.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Blue Sunday, PO Box 531653, Harlingen, TX 78553 or the charity of your choice.
