Fidela A. Garza, 81, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, in Harlingen, Texas. She was born on March 23, 1943, in Cameron County, Texas to Santiago Abrego and Maria Consuelo Luna Abrego.
Fidela's educational journey included attending La Encantada Elementary School, Los Fresnos High School, and Durham Business College where she pursued bookkeeping. Throughout her career, she served as a dedicated bookkeeper for various organizations including Kornegay Company of San Benito, Gulf Stream Greenhouse (formerly Rio Grande Nursey) of Los Fresnos, and Varmicon/Alamo Concrete of Harlingen. Additionally, Fidela actively contributed her time as a volunteer at St. Benedict Church and was involved with La Encantada PTA and Harlingen Softball Co-Ed League.
Known for her passion for walking and softball, Fidela was a devoted fan of the sport. She took great joy in attending the school and sporting events of both her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Fondly remembered as "Our Rock," Fidela was characterized as a positive, strong, independent, and loving mother who shared her wisdom and traditions with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Santiago and Maria Consuelo Abrego; her siblings, Joel Abrego and Sara A. Galarza; her nephew, John Andrew Galarza; and her ex-husband, Manuel G. Garza.
Left to treasure Fidela’s memory are her children, Connie Rosenbaum, Luis J. (Petra) Garza, Linda (Veronica) Garza; her grandchildren, Nicole Rosenbaum-Perez (Tony), Ashley Rosenbaum (Andy), Justin Garza, Robert Garza; her great grandchildren, Ethan Perez, Dominic Perez, Ian Castro, Zeke Perez and John De Leon; her siblings, Reyes Naranjo (Cipriano), Maria Elena Black (Merritt), Santiago “Jimmy” Abrego (Rebecca); Jesus “Jesse” Abrego (Leticia); sister-in-law, Josefina E. Abrego; brother-in-law, Juan Galarza; her loving pet, Sirius (dog) and as well several nieces and nephews.
The family extends their gratitude to the Gentiva Hospice Staff including Elizabeth, Marissa, Chaplin Eusebio Martinez, Antonia, Vero, Leticia, Ashley, Diana, Walter, and the CNA Group for their exceptional care during this difficult time. A special thank you is reserved for Lupita Cortez for her patient and loving assistance during Fidela's transition to heaven. The family also expresses appreciation to Dr. Tim Bothwell and Father Lui of Queen of Peace Catholic Church for their support.
The Garza family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 o’clock Tuesday evening. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Services for Fidela will conclude after the Mass.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Justin Garza, Marty Naranjo, Mark Naranjo, Omar Abrego, Tony Perez, and Andy De Leon. Honorary pallbearer will be Steve Eric Galarza.
