Gerald Richard “Gus” Gusler, 88, of Rio Hondo, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy defined by unwavering love for his family, a deep connection to the land, a passion for football, loyalty to friends, and a life lived fully and honestly.
Born on September 17, 1937, in Rio Hondo, Gerald spent his formative years at St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Harlingen. Though his mother once hoped he might join the priesthood, Gerald’s true calling revealed itself on the football field. He discovered a lifelong love of the game while playing in Rio Hondo and continued into his college years at Rice University. Football shaped his discipline and determination, traits that remained with him throughout his life.
Gerald returned to the Valley to marry, build a home, and raise a family. He was a devoted husband and an exceptional father—steady, hardworking, and deeply loving. He didn’t just provide for his children; he taught them. Through his example, he passed down an unmatched work ethic, resilience, integrity, and the importance of showing up for the people you love. He created moments—both big and small—that will be cherished forever.
A true man of the land, Gerald found joy in farming and gardening, whether growing vegetables, gathering pecans, or simply getting his hands (and feet) muddy. He loved sharing the fruits of his labor, sending friends and family home with fresh produce and pride in a job well done. With his hands, he could fix or build just about anything—including the very house he called home.
Gerald’s happiest moments were often the simplest: barefoot at sunset, a Cuba Libre in hand, dogs at his feet, grandchildren nearby calling him “Big Bop”, and laughter in the air. He adored his dogs, treasured his grandchildren, and valued deep friendships—especially with his best friends and lifelong “partners in crime”, Don and Ron Waters.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Dianne; his favorite dog, Peanut; his son Bill; daughters Vonnie and her husband Eddie Boggess, Rosie and her husband Dean Womack, Gerri and her husband Cris Ruebush. He was a proud grandfather to Kristen Townsend (Light), Chad Boggess, JD Womack, Bryce Womack (Allison), and Lizzi Ruebush, and a joyful great-grandfather to Liam Womack and Archer Townsend. He is also survived by his brother David Gusler and wife Mary Ann, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Marie Gusler, and his siblings Everett, Mae, and Joan.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 27, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo, followed by graveside services at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in San Benito, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Eddie Boggess, Dean Womack, Cris Ruebush, Light Townsend, Chad Boggess, JD Womack, and Bryce Womack. Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Early, Don Waters, David Gusler and Bill Gusler.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society (RGVHS) at https://www.rgvhs.org/memorial-donation or by calling 956-556-5885.
Gerald is now at rest, entrusted to God’s care—reunited with those who went before him, and leaving behind a family forever shaped by his love. He will be remembered as a man who worked hard, loved deeply, and was, without question, the very best dad.
