James G. "Jimmie" Hough

March 25, 1926 — June 25, 2025

James G. “Jimmie” Hough, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away June 25, 2025, in Rowlett, TX at the age of 99.

Born in Mercedes, TX on March 25, 1926, he was the son of Travers Eugene Hough and Mattie James Hough. His high-school sweetheart and beloved wife of 68 years, Constance “Connie” Doherty Hough, and his two brothers, Dr. Travers E. Hough, and Dr. Jerald P. Hough, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his three children, James Hough Jr. and wife Gail of Austin, TX, Sherryl Hough London and husband Gary of Rowlett, TX, Tom Hough of Dallas, TX, grandchildren Jennifer Hough Scoggins and son Nathan of Austin, TX, David London and wife Allison of Houston, TX, Elizabeth London Cummings and husband Edward of Farmers Branch, TX, and their two children Aniyah and Jonstonia.

Although born in Mercedes, he was a lifelong resident of Harlingen. His mother, Mattie James, was a member of the first graduating class of Harlingen High School in 1916. (The graduating class was a grand total of two, according to family lore)

He joined the Army Air Corps in June 1944. By his own telling, much of his active service was spent playing cornet in the base dance band while stationed in Marfa, TX.

He worked with his father, who was an early pioneer of the fruit and vegetable packing business in the Rio Grande Valley. He owned and operated H&V Hardware from 1957 until his retirement in the mid 2000’s. He was devoutly religious, loved church work and was a deacon and the Superintendent of Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Harlingen for 40+ years. He was also involved with community affairs, heading the Harlingen Concert Association and being on the board of the Valley Baptist Academy.

He loved snow skiing, singing in his church quartet, and building treehouses, shooting fireworks and getting into mischief with his kids and grandkids. He was much loved by his family and will be deeply missed.
