Jere Cook Light, 89, peacefully passed away on September 10, 2025, in Harlingen, Texas. He was born on September 25, 1935, in Trenton, Tennessee, to Garett W. Light and Iola Cook Light.
Jere's academic achievements were notable, holding a Bachelor of History, a Master of Education, and a Doctorate of Education. He dedicated his career to the field of education, serving at the University of Texas - Brownsville - until his retirement. He served as a high school teacher, middle school counselor, and high school principal before serving at the University of Texas – Brownsville.
Outside of his professional life, Jere was passionate about the outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing alongside his friend Marvin Huckle.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Harriet Light. Jere is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Thorman (David) and Pamela McGee (Alan); his stepchildren, Mike Wiss, Teri Wiss, Pam Karpel, and Amie Hebert; as well as his grandchildren, Carla Bethany Hughes, Samantha Lee Thorman, Shayna Lynn Betancourt, Brandi Nicole Villarreal, Blane Alan McGee; and his fishing and hunting life buddy, Marvin Huckle.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hebrew Cemetery in Brownsville.
