Jose Luis "Joey" Carrizales

Jose Luis “Joey” Carrizales, aged 63, peacefully passed away on May 20, 2025. Born on January 29, 1962, in San Benito, Texas, he was the son of Carlos Borrego Carrizales and Antonia Pena Carrizales.

Joey had a larger-than-life personality with unrivaled charisma. His love for a microphone and a stage endeared him to those who knew him best. Joey loved and adored his family, music, and had an affinity for dancing. Two of his greatest attributes were his storytelling ability and making people laugh, traits that few could match.

Joey was extremely proud of his time working under Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz and equally proud of the many years he served being the Director of Human Resources at NINOS Headstart. Having humble beginnings as the youngest of eight children and the son of a farm laborer, Joey was a staunch advocate for migrant and low-income family education. He was passionate about his beliefs and never shied away from his boisterous nature, a true gift. He will be greatly missed by all his loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his parents Carlos and Antonia Carrizales and his siblings, Guadalupe C. Sandoval and Heraclio “Eric” Carrizales Sr.

Joey is survived by his beloved wife, Ma. Cecilia Carrizales, and his daughters, Jessica Carrizales, Jovanah Gonzales (Roel), Jeanette Carrizales (Alex), and Karina Carrizales. He will also be lovingly remembered by his eleven grandchildren and his surviving siblings: Carlos Carrizales Jr., Connie Hernandez, Olga Loya, Nick Carrizales, Hector Carrizales, and Bobby Carrizales.

The Carrizales family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, May 26, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place at 7:00 p.m. that evening. All services will conclude later that night.
