Juanita S. MacPherson

Juanita Hood Stowe MacPherson died in her sleep on January 15, 2021 at the age of 93 due to Covid 19 and Alzheimer Disease.   Juanita Hood was born in Stamford, Texas on September 17, 1927 to Renan Roy and Britta Balm Jones Hood. Her family moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1929 and settled in Weslaco where she graduated from Weslaco High School in 1945. She married L. G. “Jack” Stowe in April, 1947. They moved to Harlingen in 1951 where they raised two children: Larry and Carol. Jack and Juanita enjoyed traveling into Mexico, playing bridge and visiting Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville. Jack died in 1976. In 1980 Juanita married Kenneth MacPherson and spent several years traveling in their motor home, on cruises and bus tours. Juanita was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church of Harlingen and volunteered at the Iwo Jima Museum & Gift Shop of Marine Military Academy, The Harlingen Literacy Center and Loaves & Fishes.

Juanita is survived by her loving daughter Carol McCroken, husband Ed, and their children Eddie, Jack and Amanda, and two grandchildren, her niece Darlene Lightsey Topp who was like a daughter, husband John and children Summer and Richard as well as Kenneth’s three daughters and their families: Mary MacPherson, Barbara Barks and Gerry Fleuriet. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her son, Larry Stowe, her husband’s: Jack and Kenneth, and her sisters: Edith Hood and Alma Hood Lightsey.

A family service will be held at a later date at Mont Meta Cemetery with Esther Russell-Hughes, First Presbyterian Church – Mercedes officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Iwo Jima Museum & Gift Shop of The Marine Military Academy, 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., Harlingen TX  78550 or charity of your choice.
