Juan Manuel “Johnny” Cavazos, 67, closed his eyes to this world on April 9, 2021 and opened them to see the face of his Savior and Lord. Johnny was born to the late Manuel G. and Martina Avila Cavazos on September 15, 1953 in San Benito, Texas.
He was a graduate of San Benito High School, Class of 1973, and attended Texas Southmost College, Brownsville, Texas. Families who shopped at H.E.B. #168 on Morgan Blvd. in Harlingen remember Johnny for his radiant smile and kind, gentle demeanor. He retired from H.E.B. after 41 years of dedicated service.
Johnny was a committed Christian and a member and leader of Cristo Es La Roca Church of San Benito. He loved the Lord and served over 40 years in the ministry. He was also a founder of Templo Lirio de Los Valles of San Benito. In his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening, barbecuing, country riding, spending time with his grandkids, family vacation trips, and hiking.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel G. and Martina A. Cavazos, his sisters Rachel A. Cavazos and Velma A. Cavazos, and brother Enrique Cavazos.
Left to treasure his memory is Johnny’s loving wife of 44 years, Rosa Gomez Cavazos; children, Melissa Mae (David) McGhee, Linda Marie Cavazos, and Nora Lisa Cavazos; grandchildren, William Noah McGhee, Jaeden Michael McGhee, Kaylie Abigail McGhee, and Emily Grace McGhee; siblings, Ruben (Oralia) Cavazos, Minerva (Gilbert +) Gonzales, Rosie Cavazos, Joe (Mary Lou) Cavazos, and Antonio A. Cavazos. He is also survived by his brothers, Ruben (Oralia) Cavazos, Antonio A. Cavazos, Joe (Mary Lou) Cavazos, and Enrique+ (Noemi) Cavazos. Sisters, Minerva C. (Gilbert+) Gonzales, Rosie A. Cavazos. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews.

The Cavazos family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, April 15, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 7 o’clock p.m. (Click the link below to view a live-stream of the Celebration of Life service.) A funeral service will take place on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at Cristo Es La Roca Church, 101 N. Williams Rd. in San Benito. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Antonio A. Cavazos, Joe Cavazos, David Lionel McGhee, William Noah McGhee, Jaeden Michael McGhee, Michael Lucio Rodriguez, Orlando Gonzales, Samuel E. Gonzalez, and Izaac Cortez. Ruben A. Cavazos and Santos Gomez, Jr. will serve as an honorary pallbearers.
