Lydia Peña, age 94, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, in Harlingen, Texas. She was born on April 1, 1931, in San Benito, Texas, to Leonardo and Angelita G. Perez.
Lydia dedicated her life to her family as a homemaker and was a devoted member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Her passions included sewing, crocheting, baking, and solving word search puzzles, which brought her much joy throughout her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Leonardo and Angelita Perez; her husband, Rodolfo G. Peña; her son, Arnoldo Peña; her daughters, Maria Elena Peña and Alicia Peña; her sister, Elva de la Fuente; and her brothers, Manuel Perez and Aaron Perez.
Lydia is lovingly survived by her children, Sylvia Casares and Ricardo Peña; her grandchildren, Cynthia Castillo, Ruben Casares Jr., Laura Cavada (Michael), and Logan Peña; as well as her great-grandchildren, Matthew J. Castillo, Marisela Cavada, Alejandra Cavada, Analisa Cavada, and Diego Cavada.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the East Wing Nursing Staff at Windsor (Retama) in Harlingen, Astella Hospice Care, and Dr. Timothy Bothwell from San Benito Medical Associates for years of treating her like a mom.
The Peña family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 o’clock Thursday evening. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Harlingen. Following the Mass, Lydia will be laid to rest at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Michael Cavada, Matthew Castillo, Duncan Klussmann, John Peña, Ruben de la Fuente, and Rey de la Fuente.
