Maria Esperanza Guajardo, age 92, entered into eternal rest on March 16, 2026, in Brownsville, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 22, 1933, in Brownsville, Texas to Jose Jesus Cisneros and Maria Serna.
Maria lived a very long and very meaningful life, always guided by faith, family, and hard work. She often said her goal was to live to be 100 years old, and well she might not have quite reached that golden age, but she still managed to fill every day with love, laughter, and purpose. She was a devoted Catholic whose values guided her throughout her life. She found joy in cooking, exercising, traveling, taking her grandchildren to movie theaters, volunteering, and indulging in her gambling activities such as bingo, lotería, and maquinitas. Maria had her own kind of magic! She was always moving, cleaning, caring for everyone, and somehow always washing dishes or folding clothes. She had a firm but loving way of making sure everyone listened, behaved, and followed the rules. And, if you knew her well, you’d know she had her stubborn ways. But Grandma Guajardo, was always ready for a new adventure!
She married the love of her life, Gilberto Guajardo Sr., on September 9, 1953, and together they built a strong and loving family. They raised their family around farming land, working tirelessly in the fields, and made a name for themselves in the farming industry. Maria supported this life and her husband until the end of his days, helping to build a successful business and provide for their family.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband Gilberto Guajardo Sr., her son Gilberto Guajardo Jr., and her daughter Margarita Guajardo.
Left to remember and cherish her memory are her children: Rosita G. (Ygnacio) Caraveo, Dora Lopez, and Cynthia Guajardo; and her daughter-in-law, Alicia Guajardo. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Joey (Maria) Guajardo, Ygnacio (Angie) Caraveo, Gloria (Joe) Lopez, Hector (Martha) Lopez Jr., Anthony (Patty) Guajardo, Yvonne (Joe) Tovar, and Jennifer Lopez, as well as 14 great-grandchildren who brought her immense happiness. And whom she was blessed to witness grow and participate in their life’s activities, playing the role of grandmother with love, guidance, and pride.
Maria was one of seven children and carried strong family values throughout her life. She was the last surviving sibling of her family, a role she held with strength and grace. She proudly graduated from Los Fresnos High School in 1953 as part of a close-knit class of just 29 students.
She dedicated many years of service to her community, beginning her career as a county clerk with Cameron County ASCS in San Benito, Texas, where she worked from 1953 until 1988. She continued to stay active by building and operating a family fruit stand turned small grocery store on Highway 100. Later, she served as a substitute teacher from 1996 to 2001, touching the lives of many students with her same disciplinarian ways.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Ester Venegaz and Nancy Luna for their loving and attentive care as full-time caregivers during the last few years of her life. Muchas gracias por su dedicación y cariño.
