Marie Helen (Hinojosa) Lara

October 23, 1940 — June 22, 2021

Marie Helen Lara entered into eternal rest on June 22, 2021, at the age of 80.  Helen was born on October 23, 1940 in Brownsville, TX., and is preceded in death by her loving husband, Marco Antonio Lara, her parents, Roberto G. Hinojosa and Marie Cloyd Hinojosa, her in-laws Consuelo D. Lara and Pedro A. Lara, brother in-law Pedro D. Lara Jr., her brother and wife Roberto G. Hinojosa (Terry), and niece, Sylvia Casares.

She is survived by her loving son, Marco Antonio Lara, Jr. (Molly), and two grandsons, Marco Antonio Lara, III, and Jonathan Myles Lara (Fer), and great grandson Abel Alexander Lara.  Also, her brother Fidel A. Hinojosa (Maureen), sister Julie A. Cortez, and sister in-law Dominga Lara.  As well as several nieces and nephews, Linda Mata (Secundino), Sue Saavedra (Juan), Pedro Lara III, Robert L. Longoria (Erica), Vanesa Cortez, John Albert Cortez (Dora), Francis Sosa, Yolanda Peres, Erin Porris (Daniel), Sara Orbeck (Andrew), and Megan Jackson (Andrew).

Always surrounded by her family, Helen’s passion was that of being a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.  Her life was centered on family, and her passion for teaching.  She earned a Bachelors and Masters degree in Education and served 30 years at San Benito CISD until her retirement in 1995.  After retirement she continued to serve students as a consultant for C.E.I. and a Lecturer at UTB.

Helen served on various community organizations, both in education and city, at the local and state level.

She enjoyed life.  She especially liked camping around the state, and traveling to Tennessee.  Her hobbies included reading, fishing, and spending time with her family.  She loved spending time with her grandsons, Marc, Jonathan, and great grandson Abel.

Special thanks to UT Medicine-San Antonio, Dr. Rolando Posada, Calidad Home Health, Nurse Olivia and the other medical professionals that cared for Mom.

The Lara family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, June 24, 20121 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 o’clock on Thursday evening. (Click the link below to via the Rosary via live-stream) A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Luis Tinajero, Celebrant. Following the Mass, Helen will be laid to rest at Mont Meta Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers are Jonathan Lara, Pedro Lara, III, Secundino Mata, Juan Saavedra, Roberto Longoria, and John Albert Cortez.
