Maria G. Escamilla Capistran

Maria Guadalupe Capistran, 95, of San Benito, Texas, went to be with the Lord on August 12, 2026, in Houston, Texas with her son Joe by her side. Known as Lupita by many was born Dec.11,1930, to Agapita Leal Escamilla and Pablo Escamilla in San Benito, Texas.

The most important person in her life was her husband Eleno F Capistran. She married her husband on May 5th, 1957, in San Benito and shortly after moved to Houston to raise their family. She loved the times they had going dancing and hanging out with family and friends at the dance halls. Lupita was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She had a special gift in instilling great family values. She raised all our family to be loving and caring individuals. She especially paved the way for the strong women and girls in our family. She was the glue in keeping her family together and although she will be greatly missed, the life lessons she bestowed in us will forever be in our hearts. We hope to be as lucky to live a long life as her, it was a gift to have had her for 95 years and 8 months.

After living in Houston for 22 years, Lupita’s heart lead her and her husband back to the Rio Grand Valley to where she loved the most, The Escamilla Ranch. She then became very dedicated to going to church and volunteering as a greeter and usher at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. She was known in church as the disciplinary who kept everyone in check. She was an avid baker and gardener. She enjoyed making ceramics and crocheting. Lupita loved having coffee in the mornings with her siblings that lived on the Escamilla ranch as well.

Lupita is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, (Eleno F. Capistran), her father (Pablo Escamilla Sr.), mother (Agapita Leal Escamilla), 5 brothers (Jose M. Escamilla, Pablo L. Escamilla Jr, Antonio L. Escamilla, Armando L. Escamilla, Rene L. Escamilla), and 2 sisters (Maria Magdalena Garza, Oralia Rios)

Lupita is survived by her children Eleno III (Cynthia), Paul (Susan), Gloria (Jeff), Joe (Mary).

She is also survived by her grandchildren John Paul, Jessica, Daniel, Cassandra, Nicholas, Samantha, Gabrielle, Brittany, Joseph, Matthew and 16 great grandchildren; 2 brothers (Leonel L. Escamilla & Raul L. Escamilla), in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

The Capistran family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home with a Rosary @7:00pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:00 am, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in San Benito, Texas. Burial will immediately follow at the family cemetery at the Escamilla Ranch.

Pallbearers will be John Paul Capistran, Daniel Capistran, Nicholas Schroeder, Joseph Capistran, Matthew Capistran and Jaime Escamilla.

Honorary Pallbearers are Jessica Nieto, Cassandra Paramo, Samantha Marquez, Gabrielle Santos, and Brittany Housler.
