Robert M. Scoggins

June 22, 1929 — February 25, 2022

Robert M. (Bob) Scoggins, a local retired CPA, died February 25, 2022.  He was a lifelong resident of the Harlingen and Rio Hondo area.   He was born on June 22, 1929 on the Hardin Ranch.

Bob is survived by four children: Robert Edward Scoggins (Rita), John Taylor Scoggins (Lynn), Susan Marie Scoggins, and Carol Ann Scoggins Ford (Wade); five grandchildren: Robert Craig Scoggins, Christopher Scoggins, Brian Scoggins (Meagan), Victoria Scoggins, and Elise Scoggins; four great grandchildren: Heidi Scoggins, Nathan Scoggins, Emmett Scoggins, and Isla Scoggins; his sister, Dorothy Pereira; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, MaryBelle Foelker Scoggins, and his parents, Ennis Taylor (E. T.) and Effie Scoggins.

He graduated from Rio Hondo High School in 1944 at the age of 14. Too young to attend Texas A & M, he enrolled in Durham’s Business College. In 1945, he entered Texas A & M at College Station and graduated with a degree in accounting in 1949 at the age of 20.  While attending Texas A & M, he was in the Corps and attained the cadet rank of Major and Battalion Executive Officer.

Bob was active in his professional circles.  He served as President of the Valley CPA Chapter, and on the Board of Directors of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.  He served on various committees of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants including Practice Management and Education.  In 1960, Bob established his CPA practice which evolved into Scoggins, McKelvey, Almon and Malone.  He retired from practice in 1997.

Active in the community, Bob served as President of the Valley Rehabilitation and Treatment Center and the Harlingen Country Club.  He was also founder and President of the Mount Rushmore Archives Foundation.   Bob served as treasurer for over 30 years of Life Begins at 40 Golf Tournament. Also, he served on the board of the of the Rio Hondo Independent School Board District.  Bob was a member of the Harlingen Rotary Club, member of Valley chapter of Former Students of Texas A & M, and several local churches.

Every day of their married life, MaryBelle prayed the rosary for Bob’s conversion to the Catholic faith. He became Catholic on May 20, 2017 with the guidance of his godparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald MacManus.

Bob’s family thanks Yvette Cano, owner of Treasure Hills Residential Care, who meticulously decorated Dad’s private room in Aggie décor. Special thanks to Veronica, Julie, Abel, James and many other caregivers who attended to him over six years.

Visitation will be at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home on Friday, March 4, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family members present at 5:00 p.m.  Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 6:30. (Click the link below to view a livestream of the Rosary.)

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Bobby Scoggins, Christopher Scoggins, Brian Scoggins, Tim Graham, Jim Foelker, Ryan Janssen.  Honorary pallbearers are John Phillips, Curtis Bonner, John Foelker, Dr John Ferris.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable donations be sent to Bob’s favorite charity, The Sunny Glen Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1373, San Benito, TX 78586 or Adult Congenital Heart Defects, www.achaheart.org.
