Sofia Guajardo Gomez, born on September 18, 1928, passed away peacefully at her home in Los Fresnos, Texas, on October 2, 2024, at the age of 96.
Sofia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emeterio Gomez, with whom she shared 53 years, and her cherished children: Manuel Gomez, Leonel Gomez, and Ana Maria "Anita" Longoria.
Sofia is survived by her loving sons and daughters: Guadalupe (Mona) Gomez, Alberto (✝️ Janie) Gomez, Silvia (✝️ Victor) Gonzales, Rosalinda (✝️ Eloy) Garcia, Jorge (Adriana) Gomez, Gustavo Gomez, Maricela (Jose Luis) Lozano, and the surviving spouses of Manuel Gomez and Anita Longoria. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Sofia was born to Gregorio and Librada Guajardo at O’Connor Ranch, located between Refugio and McFaddin, Texas. She and her parents relocated to Bayview in the Rio Grande Valley, where she met her lifelong husband, Emeterio. Together, Sofia and Emeterio raised their family primarily on a farm outside of San Benito known as 'La Guajalota,' which was owned by the late Dean and Gladys Porter family. For the remainder of their lives, they made their home in Los Fresnos.
Throughout their lives, Sofia and her siblings maintained a close bond, ensuring that the many Guajardo cousins stayed connected. She is the last of nine siblings to enter into eternal rest alongside: Margarita Villarreal, Santiago Guajardo, Isabel Montemayor, Gregorio Guajardo, Angelita Vela, Felicitas Smith, Maria Antonia Barrientos, and Manuel Guajardo.
For 25 years, Sofia dedicated her life to serving the students of Los Fresnos CISD as a food service worker in various schools. Her commitment and passion for nourishing children were recognized when she was honored as Employee of the Year in 2006.
Admired by her immediate and extended family as an outstanding homemaker, she crafted delicious meals from scratch, including her famous pistachio salad, "Sock it to Me" Bundt cakes, mole, tamales, hearty rib and potato stew, and tortillas, chile y frijoles. Her door was always open to friends and family, creating a welcoming home where love, laughter, and delicious food were abundantly shared. Each gathering was highlighted by the warmth of a fresh cup of coffee and pan de dulce, shared at the table, where stories flowed as freely as the conversation. Everyone experienced comfort in her home, wrapped in the embrace of togetherness and the simple joy of shared moments.
As a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos, Sofia was known for her warm spirit and kind heart. She regularly prayed the rosary alongside Mother Angelica on EWTN.
Sofia kept up to date with current events by reading newspapers and magazines well into her 90s. She enjoyed watching game shows, especially Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. An avid Dallas Cowboys fan, she cherished the moments when family gathered at her home to enjoy games together. Sofia loved to travel, frequently embarking on road trips to visit family, particularly in Dallas.
We will always remember her and carry her in our hearts. Her legacy of love, kindness, and delicious cooking will endure in the memories of all who knew her. We will forever miss her embrace, soothing voice, and beautiful smile. Until we meet again!
