Sophie Emma (Schneider) Kowalsky was welcomed by her Heavenly Lord and Savior and family on June 11, 2026 – her 94th birthday. Born to Jakob and Elsie Marie (Christesen) Schneider on June 11, 1932, Sophie was the youngest of eight children and the last living sibling. Preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Kowalsky; her parents, Jakob & Elsie Schneider; her sisters, Helen Townsend, Frieda John, Ruth Malich, and Karoline Forren; her brothers, Karl, Chris and Eddie Schneider. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Sophie was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in San Benito. She graduated from San Benito High School, and when not attending school, she had fun with her friends at the skating rink, the beach or dancing at the Harlingen Air Base. It was at the Harlingen Air Base that she met her future husband, Leonard. They were happily married for 60 years.
She found joy in her home, working in her yard, and painting her lovely ceramics. She was truly a skilled artist with attention to each small detail. Sophie also worked part-time at Lo Ree Dress Shop and the Merle Norman Studio. She would say how much she enjoyed helping women select the right clothing and makeup that would make them look their best.
Life slowed down after Leonard’s death, but she continued to overcome life’s challenges because she was a fighter and an independent woman—a “German and a Schneider and proud of it” was often heard. She looked forward to visits from family and friends where she would reminisce about her childhood memories or life with Leonard. Even at 93 years old she could talk to you about world events.
Sophie will be truly missed ... her laughter, her witty sayings, her hugs, but she will always have a place in the hearts of those who loved and knew her.
A graveside service will be held Friday, June 19, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas.
The family expresses its gratitude to Valley Baptist Medical Center’s ER & Surgical ICU staff, Valley View Assisted Living, and Caring Seniors.
