Margarita Hernandez, 91, was born on June 10, 1930 to the late Graciana Ramirez and Jose Zapata in Cerritos San Luis Potosí, México. On January 22, 2022, our Lord and Savior called our beloved mother home. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
She was a talented gardener, had a passion for sewing, and was an outstanding cook. Margarita was involved in numerous community activities including being a founding board member of Su Clinica Familiar, a Niños Inc Headstart representative, and President of Amigos del Valle-Rio Hondo, to name a few.
Margarita was a woman of strong faith. She was a devoted church member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church. She was a Eucharistic minister, a member of the Guadalupana Society, she assisted with weekly cleaning of the parish, hosted yearly Posada‘s at her residence, and she participated in many other parish events.
She is survived by her children, Estela Grossie, Elvira DeLeon, Graciela Wright, Christina Tovar, and daughter-in-law Gloria Hernandez. She is also survived by her 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren who loved and adored her dearly. Margarita is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 74 years Benigno; sons, Jorge Luis and Luis Enrique; and daughter, Elva.
Margarita’s family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo. Following the Mass, Margarita will be laid to rest at Rio Hondo Community Cemetery.
